PEAT THE MAGNIFICENT/SECRETS IN THE PEAT

The miracle beneath our feet— And the climate monster that lies within

For years we’ve looked to the Amazon rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef as symbols of our planet’s health. The more they’re destroyed, the more we feel our global environment is reaching a tipping point. But who knew that peatlands were just as important?

Next to the oceans, peatlands absorb and store more carbon than any other natural system – more than two times all the forests on Earth. A miracle soil formed over thousands of years, peat also protects against wildfires, provides habitat for spectacular animals and plants, and is home to indigenous peoples throughout the North.

Now, faced with a warming planet, scientists are sounding the alarm that it’s time to wake up to the powers of Peat.

From a bio pharmacy lab in Ireland, and the largest bog in Europe, to a hunter-trapper’s remote cabin, and the most-extensive climate change experiment on Earth, Peat the Magnificent reveals peatlands in all their beautiful, magical, and multi-faceted wonder.
