It’s one of the most ambitious underground construction projects ever seen. It’s also the largest ever archaeological endeavor in Europe.
In Rome, Italy, armies of engineers are building Metro Line C to meet the needs of its growing population. Once complete, this hyper-efficient, 25 km artery will connect Rome’s outskirts to the city center. Now, after almost two decades of construction in the suburbs, Line C has entered the downtown core. That’s where the real challenges lie.
Building a metro in any city is never easy. But this is Rome. It comes with 3,000 years of extraordinary urban development, with each generation built on top of the previous one. Construction means digging into 12 to 15 meters of Medieval and ancient Roman archaeology. It’s an underground dilemma like nowhere else on Earth… and the most important archaeological adventure of the modern age.
